How does your creative process usually go?
My ideas come to me very randomly. I could get an idea from a song, a quote, an image, a movie... literally anywhere lol. If it "sparks joy" and excites me, then I will start writing down some ideas to see if I have enough to sustain a story. I always have random scenes/dialogue in my head first, so I write all of that down. Once I put those in order, I will connect the puzzle pieces with information that comes to me. Sometimes I don't even know what's going to happen until I am literally sitting there writing it! If I don't have any major scenes to connect them with, then I will focus on character development and include scenes that may not relate to the overarching plot, but help us to connect with and understand the characters better. I hope this helps! |
I was wondering how long it typically takes to complete and publish a story?
Unfortunately, I don't have a solid answer to this question because all of my published works have taken drastically different amounts of time! For instance, one of my books took a month to write, whereas my trilogy took a decade! It depends on how fast you write, how often you have time to dedicate to your writing, how quickly the story ideas come to you, how long the book is, and many more factors. My advice? Write whenever you can and don't stop until the story feels done! How do you find inspiration to finish stories? I'm good at beginning stories, but I can't seem to finish them. Any advice?
it is definitely easier to start a story than it is to finish it. My advice is to imagine the ending either before you start writing, or at the very beginning of your writing process. This way, you know what you want the story to culminate in and you have a goal to get to. Knowing the ending before writing will also assist in developing your characters and choosing their dialogue/thoughts/actions. If you can envision the beginning, middle, and end (even if your vision isn't very detailed yet) you can skip around in the plot and write scenes that are most vivid to you. |
How do you combat writer's block?
It isn't very often that a writer can sit down and write a story from start to finish without getting caught up - it's normal! The way that I combat this is to immerse myself back into the creative process. You can do this in a variety of ways. What helps me the most is to listen to songs or a playlist that reminds me of the characters/scenes/vibes of my story. Listening to songs has helped me solve large plot holes before! Also--and this sounds obvious--just sit down and force yourself to write. Even if it doesn't end up in the final story, even if it's completely unrelated to your story. Forcing your mind and body back into the writing process can help break through the barrier of writer's block. Hope this helps! |
